[ cheers and applause ] >> cenk: there you have it the first presidential debate of 2012. i have a feeling we have mixed feelings about how that debate went. of course you have to keep in mind we'll be discussing tactics here. we know all of the policies and facts that go behind us. some of the viewers might be experiencing those policies in substance for the first time and they might have a different take. now on to the tactics and how it appears, vice president gore? >> al gore: i said before the debate that i thought that romney was going to be a better performer tonight, because he knows how far behind he is and he had to bring his a game, and i think he did. i don't think it was the best debate performance for president obama. i agree with you we'll have to see how the specifics on the substantive issues settle in as people reflect on them. but the first visceral reaction i had was that romney did himself some good in this debate. i'm strongly supporting

[cheers and applause] neil: the first presidential debate is done, and the two men, did, in fact, bring it on. i'll let some of the pundits and others who we will not be interviewing tonight, but some of their respective supporters, the respective spouses give their congratulatory hugs, put the proper spin on it, but i do want to show you a phenomena that is unique in american politics after a debate of this magnitude. i want to switch to where i am now here in what they call the spin room. the spin began before these guys were even done. you could see florida senator marco rubio, who was here before the debate was even finished, talking to the press, no doubt, saying mitt romney had done very well. it's hard to sit here. if we can pull out, guys, or get a sense of the throng pushing in this room, but on the opposite side of the room -- if we can leave marco rubio and spin around if that's possible, there's a crush of republicans and democrats giving reporters their perspective two ce

so much has been up written about the moderators from jim lehrer and martha raddatz as will be said tonight about the job candy crowley did. here is a sampling of how these two at times went after each other. >> there were a whole bunch of cuts. >> i had a question, and the question was how much did you cut them by? how much did you cut them by? >> i'm happy to answer the question. >> and it is? you're a person pushing for oil and gas and coal. you'll get your chance in a moment. i'm still speaking, and the answer is i don't believe people think that's the case. that wasn't a question. that was take statement. did you look at your pension. >> i don't look at my pension. it's not as big as yours. >> let me give you advice. >> that's how they got along at more spirited moments of the evening. we're happy to be joined by the man whose job it was to prepare governor romney for tonight's proceeding, ohio republican senator rob portman. to read a quote back to you you said before this your job was to be so annoying to governor romney during debate prep to that the president wouldn't seem so bad.
